Alienation (n.) the state or experience of being isolated from a group or an activity to which one should belong or in which one should be involved.
Alienate (v.) a withdrawing or separation of a person or a person’s affections from an object or position of former attachment.
I first want to preface that in some of the alienation cases, it might be totally justified to keep a grandparent from their grandchild specifically if the grandparent is abusive or unfit. Those situations do exist but the majority of grandparents are loving, caring, human beings who want the best for their family and have special relationships with their grandchildren.
The parent of the adult child processes over and over in their minds about where it could have gone wrong; what could they have possibly done to be estranged from their son or daughter and cutoff from their grandkids.
Some grandparents may have made some mistakes in raising their children but they loved their child and gave it their best attempt to be a good mother or father, even with the setbacks. Parents who are now grandparents remember giving of their time, money, affection, and unconditional love, with only good intentions in raising their kids into adults, only now to be shunned and cut off with no thought at all of the hurt and harm being done to the grandchild and grandparent.
I can attest to the heartbreak, the devastation, the confusion, and the betrayal because it happened to us and never in a million years did I see it coming. I’ll go into more detail about my story in later entries.
My blog’s namesake, GRAMMAWARRIOR was inspired by a song by country music singer, Jimmie Allen. The song speaks of the strength, resilience, and unconditional love of a mother and grandmother. See the lyrics below and you can view the video at:
WARRIOR by Jimmie Allen (2018)
She’s tougher than she looks
Her heart has a strong right hook
For all the hard times that we went through
There’s nothing that she wouldn’t do
For me and my baby sister
And that woman in that picture
Ain’t just a woman in that picture
That’s my mama, and I call her
A warrior, a fighter
A get back up, a never say die
A keep on getting strong
A hanging just a little bit longer
For every one step back there’s two steps forward
A warrior
Up before the sun
And praying to the one that blessed her
With patience and four kids
Ain’t no doubt this where my mama gets it
That blood in my mama’s veins
She reminds me that it came
From the other woman in that picture
That’s my grandma, and I call her
A warrior, a fighter
A get back up, a never say die
A keep on getting strong
A hanging just a little bit longer
For every one step back there’s two steps forward
A warrior
The blood that’s in my veins I know that it came from a warrior, hm, yeah
Oh, yeah, a warrior Oh, yeah she’s
A warrior, a fighter
A get back up, a never say die
A keep on getting strong
A hanging just a little bit longer
For every one step back there’s two steps forward
A warrior
Yeah she’s a warrior Oh yeah A warrior
